[Abstract]
In our rapidly evolving technological landscape, artificial intelligence is reshaping social, political, and ethical structures—often in ways we struggle to fully understand. Drawing on insights from Jonathan Haidt’s social psychology and Yuval Noah Harari’s (among others') exploration of AI’s transformative power, my presentation will examine how AI-generated content, micro-targeting, and data-driven surveillance can profoundly impact democratic institutions and the narratives that sustain them. By focusing on the central concepts of human dignity and mutual trust, we will explore how the erosion of shared public discourse and the proliferation of echo chambers threaten key democratic pillars of trust, accountability, and community. Beyond diagnosing the challenges, the talk will propose relationally grounded strategies—rooted in ethics, theology, and cultural anthropology—to ensure AI development aligns with democratic values and nurtures rather than undermines our social fabric. Ultimately, my reflection will highlight the responsibility shared by scholars, policymakers, and technologists to forge collaborative, ethically sound responses so that AI remains a means of strengthening human collaboration and safeguarding the common good.
