會議主旨 Goals & Objectives

The historical and contemporary connections between Taiwan and Southeast Asia are deep and complex, encompassing Austronesian migrations, Fujianese and Cantonese settlement, Japanese colonial policies, and contemporary patterns of transnational mobility. These processes have produced a multilayered cultural landscape. However, traditional narratives have often centered on Han Chinese experiences, overlooking the significance of Indigenous peoples within the Austronesian sphere and the contributions of new immigrants and second-generation communities in reshaping Taiwan’s plural identities.

Guided by the themes of "rooted" and "regenerating", this conference explores how individuals and cultures find grounding and transformation through migration. The "rooted" aspect focuses on adaptation, language acquisition, and identity negotiation in local contexts, while "regenerating" examines how cultural meanings are translated and renewed across borders. Drawing from perspectives on cultural hybridity and transculturality, the conference seeks to understand how transnational movement redefines belonging in a globalized era.

Positioned as both an Austronesian homeland and a crossroads of Southeast Asian cultures, Taiwan provides a vital site for examining how mobility shapes identity formation and cultural reinvention, and for reimagining what it means to become Taiwanese in the twenty-first century.
